Toddler Unit

The Toddler unit is for children aged between 2 and 3 years, again the children are in this room based on their development as an individual, however, having an age bracket gives a good guideline for particular skills that are needed before progressing to this room. The room is set out to support the 6 areas of learning and development as laid out in the EYFS consisting of a role play area, quiet area for reading, rest and circle times, messy area, water tray, activity areas for small world and construction, ICT and a mark making area. There is a separate area for eating and doing large scale creative activities also. The same Key Person System is used in all rooms and all staff encourage children from their Key Group to join in with activities, if the children do not feel like taking part alternative activities and free choice is available for them. Staff are again responsible for making observations on the children within the room, planning for them and giving feedback to parents at the end of the session. The routine becomes more structured at this age group helping to instil a sense of discipline in the children with a soft approach, the routine consists of 3 meal times a day, plus snack times, planned outdoor time and a rest period in the middle of the day, children are encouraged to sleep but as they grow out of their mid-day sleep they are still encouraged to have a rest period where they can have a lie down or sit quietly and read a book. Children are encouraged to set up and tidy away activities with staff giving them an understanding of respect and care for resources and their environment and children are encouraged to initiate their own play and activities supported by the adults in the room.
