Pre-School UnitThe Pre-school Unit can accommodate children aged from rising 3’s – 5 years of age. If there is more than one room available on site for the Preschool aged children they are encouraged to free-flow between the rooms allowing them to gain a better perspective for spatial awareness and significant areas as are encouraged and developed within most primary education. This allows the staff to cater more specifically to each individual’s need and in their important preparation of their transition to school later on. The rooms are laid out to show representation of the 6 areas of learning and development as set out in the EYFS practice guidance. These areas consist of a large role play corner, a quiet corner with cushions, books, pictures and puppets, a mark making area with access to paper, pencils, crayons, chalks, stencils, chalk boards and rulers. A computer with educational games is accessible to all children along with a free choice trollies holding a variety of up to 20 different activities including a selection of construction toys such as Lego, Waffle Blocks, Stickle Bricks and wooden blocks along with Jigsaw puzzles, threading activities and many more, there are 2 tables set out for focus activities and a designated carpet area for small world. The messy tray for sensorial play and water tray are set out on the linoleum area as well as creative craft activities too. Regular observations for planning are conducted by all staff within the room and all children are given the opportunity to participate in all activities on offer. A routine is laid out as a guideline which allows for time to be spent on each of the six areas of Learning and Development, this includes a rest period where children can either have a nap or sit quietly reading a book or just listening to calming music and also incorporates time in the outdoor play area which helps them to “let off steam” and continue to progress in their physical development. The staff within the room plan around the children’s individual needs and interests; this is done through observation and assessment and then planning their next steps. |
